Hornsby Art Prize (Winner)

The Artist looking suitably smug/awkward.

Winning the Hornsby Art Prize gave a tremendous boost to my already wonderful year of 2023!

This is a great opportunity for artists to advance their career and of course wonderful financial support to help them continue to work full time as artists.

Thanks to the Team at Hornsby Shire for organising this important award and the stellar opening event at their beautiful building in Sydney’s north.

Esteemed artist Mr James Powditch was a Judge of the awards and made these kind comments about the painting:

“This work just kept pulling me back for another look. I’m a bit of a film nut and it struck me as very cinematic and open to interpretation. I loved the muted colour palette and dark lighting, almost like a film still. I saw it as a puzzle or a mystery, kind of like if Edward Hopper wandered into David Lynch’s Red Room from Twin Peaks. So many questions... what is going on here? Who is the girl? She seems confidently disconnected from the mysterious, menacing figure who we catch only partial glimpses of as he circles her. It’s also an accomplished painting with a subdued yet resonating power that compelled me to revisit over and over again in an attempt to unlock its secrets.”
